HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – On October 22, 2011, the AVP will bring the inaugural AVP Championships event to world famous Surf City, Huntington Beach, Calif.

The event will be a one-day, single-elimination shoot-out for the top four teams per gender (by AVP Cup ranking) and take place directly in front of The Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel.

Competition commences at 10:00 a.m. and is expected to finish no later than 6:00 p.m., with the women’s final scheduled for 3:00 p.m., and men’s final immediately following (est. 4:30 p.m.).

General admission is FREE, with limited courtside seating available on a first-come first-serve basis. The north end line will feature a beer & wine garden hosted by Shades Restaurant and Bar. Sponsor row will include food options such as “East Borough Fraiche Vietnamese” serving their famous pork sandwiches and spring rolls, “Juice It Up” serving Acai Bowls and fresh fruit smoothies, “Zico” supplying unlimited hydration with their delicious coconut water, “Oh Yeah! Nutrition” providing the necessary energy to get through the day with their top-rated bars and shakes, and “Pipeline Shave Ice” serving North Shore worthy shave ice, among others…

Teams qualifying internationally for the inaugural AVP Championships event include Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser and Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal. Due to Rogers’ knee injury, and consequent surgery, the No. 1 seeds will be unable to compete. Taking their place will be the third-ranked U.S. team on the FIVB World Tour, Matt Fuerbringer and Nick Lucena.

For the women, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh and April Ross and Jen Kessy both qualified No. 1 and No. 2 overseas, but neither team will be able to compete in Huntington due to injuries and fatigue. Taking their place will beLauren Fendrick and Brooke Hanson and Nicole Branagh and Angie Akers.

Men’s teams qualifying domestically include Sean Scott and John Hyden and John Mayer and Matt Prosser. Coming down to the last regular season event, Mayer and Prosser stepped up their game to secure the last spot in Huntington Beach with a 5th-place finish in Hermosa Beach.

Whitney Pavlik and Jenny Kropp qualified in first place domestically for the ladies by reaching the finals in eight out of 10 events on American sand this summer, and Florida natives Kristen Batt and Brooke Sweat put together the best year of their young careers, finishing the points race in second place.

Players will receive a two-night stay at The Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel, and be guests of honor Friday night at the official pre-event dinner hosted by Shades Restaurant.
